Riparia completed the environmental design to divert 15 km of a natural creek to allow the construction of an oil sands tailing facility. The project included the creation of new wetland and riparian habitats to replace the extent and functionality of habitats to be removed. Particular emphasis was placed on working within the existing microtopographic and vegetation mosaic pattern so that a durable “natural” channel could be created with the least disturbance. The project received a national engineering award in 2007.
